New York arts grants support "Got My Wings" high school workshops; Jarvis on "Black Men Speak" podcast

A year after his autobiography was chosen as an Oprah’s Book Club Pick (September 2022), Jarvis’ writings continue to reverberate with readers around the world.

Jazz educator Daniel Blake won two grants from Humanities New York and Arts Westchester to present several “Got My Wings” educational workshops to high school students in Westchester County, New York throughout Fall 2023. Students across three local campuses will attend fieldtrips to the Bethany Arts Center and participate in creative programming. The “Got My Wings” project was produced in collaboration with Jarvis, explores various themes in Jarvis’ books, and allows students to examine incarceration and social justice through the arts. Watch the community Zoom call with Jarvis and Ossining-based youth organization ENUBuilds recorded earlier this year and find more info at gotmywings.org.

Meanwhile, Jarvis persists in engaging with a variety of community groups via phone, having spoken to chaplaincy trainees at Upaya Zen Center in New Mexico, students in an honors English class at Santiago Canyon College in California, and podcasters.

Jarvis was interviewed by host Keith Dent in a special 4-part series for the “Black Men Speak” podcast to be released October 10-31 and available here.
